Resist queer-bashing, rally and die-in

Hosted by UVic Pride & Women's Centre.

  • Mar 25, 2008 (Tuesday), 1:30 start
  • At UVic fountain

Each year at the Trans Day of Rememberance (TDOR) on November 20th, an average of 15-20 people are memorialized who were killed that year because of their gender expression. Since TDOR this year as many people have been killed as usuially die in a year. Naturally, we cannot let this happen without comment…

TUESDAY MARCH 25TH

Rally at 1:30 at the UVic Fountain – Speakers, listing the names of the dead, and A MASSDIE-IN” (large group of people collapsing on the ground to represent the dead).

2:30 – Gender-analysis workshop, anti-queer violence intervention, and how to be a super rad awesome ally (At Cinecenta).

4:00 – Awesome queer movie: “She’s A Boy I Knew” Vancouver filmmaker Gwen Haworth’s newly released film documenting her transition from male to female (At the small side of the Michelle Pujol Room).

We will also have a collection of stories recorded on squares of fabric which will be hung on a line around the fountain on the day of the rally. Later we will be making these squares into a quilt together at a Queer Quilting Bee.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! To be a “die-in” volunteer please contact Anna Turje at aturje@uvic.ca (allys very welcome! Homophobia/genderism effects the straighties too!). We need lots of people to “die” to make a statement that will be noticed.

(We will be inviting members of the media to cover this event, but we will also be issuing a statement that anyone they take photos of must give them consent, so this should be a safe event where you will not be “outted” publicly by accident)

We Need You to come out to this event! It’s so important that we get the word out about these deaths and the shitty-ass systems that keep this happening year after year. Hope to see you all there!

…until nobody lives in fear
