The Vancouver Men’s Chorus presents: Voices Carry, a celebration of the Canadian GLBT community’s ongoing pursuit of intellectual freedom, with a special tribute to the Vancouver’s Little Sister’s Bookstore.
VOICES CARRY brings the music of more than 100 community singers and instrumentalists together with personal narrations from Little Sister’s original co-owner and community activist Jim Deva, and store manager and author Janine Fuller.
The Vancouver Men’s Chorus, under the artistic direction of conductor Willi Zwozdesky, is Canada’s first male voice choir for gay men and their friends. It concludes its 27th season with additional performances of VOICES CARRY in Victoria (June 7).
The evening’s musical entertainment features new music written for VOICES CARRY, including collaborations of Canadian artists Bill Richardson with Stephen Smith (Bungery Bonaroo!), and Michael Harper with Michael Wiskar (Climb the Stairs, My Permission), as well as choral adaptations of music by Vancouver’s New Pornographers (My Rights Vs. Yours), Toronto’s Lorraine Segato of Parachute Club (Rise Up), and Winnipeg’s The Wailin’ Jennys (One Voice). Contemporary music by international activist icons includes Melissa Etheridge (Giant), Heather Small (Proud), Australia’s Fruit (Narrow), and history makers Constantine Cavafy, Kurt Weill, and Cole Porter.
Women’s voices also unite with the men’s, resonantly complementing the powerful communication from the stage. In a gesture that clearly reflects BC’s lesbian-gay community, the invitation to join in a massed choir feature has been accepted by community women’s choirs from Vancouver to Victoria, Nanaimo, and Kelowna where a new, mixed voice glbt choir is forming.
